Whilst every business is different, we each spend time in three distinct levels of activity.
1. Administration and Support
This is the stuff you don't get paid for, but have to do to keep the wheels turning.
It includes your accounting and internal administration, managing staff and internal
systems. This is sometimes referred to as the cost of doing business, and as a cash
outflow, we visualise it as 'Red' work.
2. Operations
Here we actually generate and deliver the products and services which ultimately
make us money. At this layer, Products and Services mean much the same thing.
Work here includes Product Design and Delivery, Servicing Clients, Sales and Marketing.
As cashflow generation, we see this as 'Blue' work.
3. Management
Global business direction is defined by activity in this area. New concepts, Markets,
Opportunities and Joint Ventures can all be conceived and mapped out at this level.
This is the stuff that generates Profit, Shareholder Wealth and Equity. This keeps business in the 'Black'.
Now...
It's fair to say that most viable businesses have some Managerial Direction.
If yours doesn't, well... you need more help than we can give you. Similarly, most viable
businesses have some Product or Service worth paying for.
Where we find all this
usually falling down, is that the Core Business Systems are either fragmented,
out of date, or not aligned to business processes or requirements.
